Berry Delicious

5.14.18

They may have looked poisonous but they are actually delicious! We discovered a grocery store right around the corner from our hotel and I decided to take a look at the local fruit in Caen. I found what Claire said the locals call “Red Berries”. They sound very vague and ominous but they are similar to the taste of cranberries and the size of small blueberries. I’m really glad we were able to have some extra free time today to explore the castle and the pastry shops. One we stopped at had chocolate and coffee eclairs. I got the latter flavor and ate it in .5 seconds. It was absolutely amazing and i cant believe I had never had any type of eclair before. This free time and pastry adventure happened after we visited the “Les Braves Memorial of Omaha Beach” amongst a series of other memorials and cemeteries. The location and site interaction of this memorial made it my favorite of the day. We got to visit during high tide so the wave would lap up just past the brutal metal curves and create a smooth reflective surface. The site also included flags of every country involved in helping at Normandy. I was actually able to grab some sand from the site for a future project with a variety of sands from different locations. I am really glad we’ve been able to split some of the days into organized and guided and free time for exploring.
