DUE WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2021
The Normandy Scholars Program is open to all undergraduate students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Students selected for the program will register for a 3-credit-hour Normandy Scholars Seminar during spring semester 2022 and participate in a May mini-term study trip to locations in Germany, Poland, and Hungary. All successful applicants will receive a $3,000 scholarship that can only be used to defray program costs. If due to the COVID-19 situation or other reasons the study-abroad trip is cancelled, students will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Participants will be selected based on three main criteria, listed in order of importance: academic promise; the program’s goal of involving a cross-disciplinary group; and financial need. Interested students must have at least a 3.25 GPA and sophomore standing or higher at the time of application.
The application is made through the Programs Abroad Office and will include:
- An essay of no more than 400 words addressing the following prompt: Why do societies need to commemorate or memorialize past conflicts? Conclude your essay with some reflections on how this program might contribute to your intellectual or academic development.
- The name and email address of one University of Tennessee, Knoxville faculty member who can comment on your abilities as a student (you have done coursework with them, or they have been involved in your research work). The faculty member does not have to write a letter, but you should ask them in advance if they are willing to serve as a reference.
