Reliving Memories through Paintings: A Walk through Versailles

Commentary and photocollage by Sara Meghabghab.

I was able to visit Versailles with a few other Normandy Scholars and we learned so much about the history and architecture. I have always appreciated this form of art, so I was so incredibly excited to see the different portraits of Marie Antoinette and Louis XIV. It was surreal to walk through the mansion that they lived in and see the collection of memories that we can experience today. You can see Pierre Nora’s concept of a lieu de mémoire with monuments and symbols throughout the palace grounds.
